2. Community

Children of different ages need to have separate areas to play as they all have different ability levels. This allows for each group to be sufficiently challenged and to be able to push themselves in a safe area. You should also be aware of children with disabilities and the accomodations they may need.

3. Space

The minimum amount of space needed is 22’ x 22’ like the explorer Juan De Onate playground.

For a full playground experience, a 50’ x 50’ space is ideal.

Schools and other high-traffic areas might need several structures and freestanding events.

4. Timeline

When a project is expected to be finished, can greatly affect the amount of budget available for your actual equipment. Whenever there is a rush put on a project, it increases the cost.

On average installation can take 9 or more months to complete.

Custom structures with installations can take up to a year.

Questions & Vocabulary

Questions you may have for us

1) How expensive is a playground?: The price can vary based on the size of the space, type of equipment used, materials used to make the equipment, and safety surfacing.

2) How do I know which one to buy?: Playgrounds are bought for lots of reasons. The right one for you will address the needs in your specific community including ages of chil-dren and special needs.

3) How long does it take from purchase to complete installation?:Depending on several factors it can take 2 months to a year. On average, a custom structure will take roughly 9 months if you are having it installed.

4) How much maintenance does it require?: Playgrounds require weekly, monthly, and annual maintenance. The maintenance can be reduced by selecting lower maintenance safety surfacing.

5) Are there any codes that I need to comply with?: The ASTM codes set the rules for playground equipment for children between the ages of 2 – 12. The CPSC has suggested guidelines for children between the ages of 6 – 24 months.

Vocabulary you should know

1) Safety Zone: the area that is needed around a piece of play equipment to provide space for falls.

2) Fall Height: the highest playable surface on a structure.

3) Safety Surfacing: the surface used beneath a piece of equipment to cushion a fall.

4) Event: one activity on a larger structure or a single free-standing structure.

5) CPSI: Certified Playground Safety Inspector, a person who has been certified to check safety. They should do annual inspections of your playground.

6) Age Separation: Creating different areas for different age groups to allow for a safer play experience.

7) IPEMA: International Play Equipment Manufacturer’s Association, a group that tests and certifies playground equipment for safety.
